Suor Maria Nazarena Sandri

In the beautiful crown of seraphic flowers that bloomed in the blessed land of Verolanuova, among the Minor Friars Capuchins who were born there, Sister Maria Nazarena Sandri stands out. She was a Clarissa Capuchin Nun of the second Order of St. Francis.

She was born in Verolanuova on June 1, 1701, the daughter of Signori Carlo Sandri and Giulia Calzavacca.
At the age of 15, fragrant with virtues as a candid lily, she heard her first call from the austere walls of the monastery of the Capuchin Sisters of Brescia. There she met the Blessed Maria Maddalena from Barco, a Nun of the greatest kindness and sanctity.

Signor Carlo Sandri, fearing that his young daughter was not mature enough to enter a monastery of strict rule, placed her for a trial period in the College of the Sisters Maggi, Daughters of Saint Angela Merici in Brescia, where the Blessed Maria Martinengo from Barco had also stayed.

After a short time in this College, at barely sixteen years of age, she fulfilled her wish and entered the monastery of the Capuchin Nuns. She took the auspicious name of Sister Maria Nazarena.

It was the 8th of September 1717, the day of the Child Mary.

The crucified Nazarene was calling her to his cross to suffer and pray.

Her vocation was certain, proven, explicit. After a year as a novice, she took her vows on the 11th of September 1718.The exemplarity of her life, her deep humility, her strict obedience to the Rule made her the object of admiration and emulation in the monastery where

Mother Martinengo from Barco shone as a star of first magnitude.

When the latter became Abbess, she made Sandri "Rotara", i.e. Door-keeper and Overseer of the common parlour.

At 38 she was elected Mistress of Novices, at 40 she succeeded the Blessed Martinengo as Abbess. She kept the highly esteemed position for two successive triennial periods until the 6th of September 1747. When her allowed term of office came to an end, the new Abbess made her Vicaress.During her tenure as Abbess she was very devoted to the Holy Sacrament and awakened the Eucharistic cult in the monastery with new church services and new liturgical pomp. It seemed to her that she was never doing enough to worship and honour her vigilant and radiant Spouse on the altar.

At 46 years of age she fell sick with a serious, painful and incurable disease, during the course of which she always gave admirable examples of  resignation and virtue to her daughters and sisters.

She died in Brescia on the 14th of December 1749, on the third Sunday of Advent.

She was buried in the now deconsecrate church of her monastery, leaving deep admiration in all those who knew her for her religious virtues and the sanctity of her life. (1)

Sister Maria Nazarena Sandri left some spiritual writings, as Blessed Martinengo had also done. They were collected and published in 1796, several years after her death, by father Francesco Savio, Canon of the illustrious Collegiate of Verolanuova, in the rare and precious book: "Way to unite the soul with God, derived from the writings of Sister Maria Nazarena Sandri Abbess of the Capuchin Nuns of Brescia. Important advises to the nuns. Life and practice of the virtues of the above named sister." (Brescia, MDCCXCVI, Editor Pietro Vescovi, pp. xvi-384 in 8).

(Note 1: The monastery of the Capuchin Nuns where the Blessed Martinengo died was in Via delle Battaglie and now is the (Silva) Rovetta house. The cell where she died is there preserved as a private chapel).
